About this tool

About PDF Metadata Viewer

PDF Metadata Viewer reads the document properties stored inside a PDF: title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, PDF version, page count and file size. PDF dates are decoded into a readable form, and anything missing is marked Not specified.

Metadata affects how a PDF is labelled in browsers, search results and document systems, and it can reveal information you may not want to share. Checking it before publishing or sending a file is quick and private.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Review the metadata table.
  3. Check the decoded dates against the stored values.

FAQ

Common questions

Title, author, subject, keywords, creator (the application that made the original), producer (the software that wrote the PDF), creation and modification dates, PDF version, page count and file size, plus whether usage restrictions or form fields are present.
The PDF does not contain that value. Many PDFs leave fields such as subject or keywords empty.
PDF dates are stored like D:20240115103000+05'30'. The viewer converts them to 2024-01-15 10:30:00 UTC+05:30 and shows the stored value beside it. If a date is malformed it is shown exactly as stored, marked as not decoded.
Not on their own. Metadata is whatever the software or person that made the file recorded; it can be blank, wrong or edited later. It is not proof of who wrote a document or when.
Some PDFs keep properties in an XMP metadata stream instead of the classic document information. When a field is missing from the classic set, the XMP value is used and labelled.
No. A PDF that needs a password to open is refused. PDFs that only restrict printing or copying can be read and are marked as having permission restrictions.
No. The PDF is opened and processed entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or sent, and Reset clears it from the page.
