About this tool

About Markdown Table Generator

Markdown Table Generator lets you build GitHub-Flavored Markdown tables in a spreadsheet-like grid. Add, remove and reorder rows and columns, set each column’s alignment, toggle the header row, and paste CSV, tab-separated text or cells copied from a spreadsheet. The tool escapes pipes, backslashes and line breaks, shows the Markdown live and previews the table.

Markdown tables are easy to read but tedious to type: every row needs pipes, the alignment row needs colons, and a single unescaped | breaks the layout. Building the table visually avoids these mistakes and makes it simple to turn spreadsheet data into documentation, README files or issue comments.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Type into the grid, paste cells from a spreadsheet, or load the sample data.
  2. Add, remove or move rows and columns with the buttons.
  3. Choose the alignment for each column.
  4. Decide whether the first row is the header and how line breaks are handled.
  5. Check the Markdown and the preview.
  6. Copy the Markdown or download it as a .md file.

Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Keep tables narrow — wide tables are hard to read in Markdown and on phones.
  • Use right alignment for numbers and prices.
  • Put long explanations below the table rather than inside cells.
  • Keep the HTML escaping option on unless you intend to use HTML in cells.
  • Preview the result in the platform where it will be published.

FAQ

Common questions

GitHub-Flavored Markdown (GFM) tables, which are also supported by GitLab, most static-site generators, many note apps and documentation tools. Plain CommonMark does not include tables.
Markdown tables always need a header row. If you turn the header off, the tool writes an empty header row so the table stays valid.
Pipes (|) become \|, backslashes are doubled, and line breaks inside a cell become <br> or a space, because a table row must stay on one line. Optionally, < and > are escaped so pasted HTML shows as text.
Yes. Copy cells and paste into any cell of the grid to fill the table from that point, or paste CSV or tab-separated text into the import box.
Yes — text such as **bold** or `code` is kept, so it will be formatted when the Markdown is rendered. The preview here shows cell text exactly as typed.
Up to 100 rows and 20 columns, with up to 1,000 characters per cell, so editing stays fast. Larger pasted data is cut to the limit and you’re told what was left out.
No. Cells are plain text; nothing pasted is run as HTML, Markdown or spreadsheet formulas, and everything stays in your browser.
