Ideal Weight Calculator

Enter your sex and height to see what four well-known formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — estimate as an “ideal” body weight, in kilograms and pounds. These are simple population formulas for adults, shown for information only. Calculated locally in your browser.

About this tool

About Ideal Weight Calculator

Ideal Weight Calculator shows what four classic height-based formulas — Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi — estimate as an ideal body weight for an adult of a given sex and height. Each result is shown in kilograms and pounds with the exact equation used, together with the span between the formulas.

These formulas are widely quoted, for example in clinical dosing references, but they disagree with each other. Seeing all four side by side, with their equations, makes clear that they are rough population estimates rather than a single correct number.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Choose the sex used by the formulas.
  2. Pick a height unit: centimetres, metres, inches, or feet and inches.
  3. Enter your height (5 ft / 152.4 cm or taller).
  4. Press Estimate ideal weight.
  5. Compare the four estimates and their span, then copy or download the summary.

Tips for best results

  • Treat the results as a rough range, not a personal target.
  • Measure height without shoes, standing straight against a wall.
  • Remember the formulas ignore muscle mass, frame size and age.
  • Ask a qualified healthcare professional for personal advice about weight.

FAQ

Common questions

They were published between 1964 and 1983 — Hamwi (1964), Devine (1974), Robinson (1983) and Miller (1983) — mainly to estimate doses of medicines. Each starts from a base weight at 5 feet (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount for every inch above that.
With H = inches over 5 feet: Devine — men 50 + 2.3H kg, women 45.5 + 2.3H kg. Robinson — men 52 + 1.9H kg, women 49 + 1.7H kg. Miller — men 56.2 + 1.41H kg, women 53.1 + 1.36H kg. Hamwi — men 48 + 2.7H kg, women 45.5 + 2.2H kg. Pounds are kg × 2.20462.
They were derived differently and for different purposes, so they disagree — especially for very tall or short heights. The calculator shows all four and the span between the lowest and highest, rather than picking one.
All four formulas are defined as a base weight at 5 feet plus an amount per inch above it. Below 152.4 cm they are not designed to be used, so the calculator does not extrapolate. The upper limit is 7 feet 6 inches (228.6 cm).
No. These are formula estimates for adults based only on height and sex. They do not consider age, body build, muscle mass, health conditions or any personal factors, and they are not medical advice, a diagnosis or a personal target. For advice about your weight, talk to a qualified healthcare professional.
Centimetres, metres, inches, or feet and inches. Every unit is converted to inches using 1 inch = 2.54 cm, and the summary shows the converted height.
