File Duplicate Detector

Select files or a whole folder to find files with identical content, even when their names differ. Each file gets a SHA-256 checksum calculated on your device; nothing is uploaded, and no file is moved, renamed or deleted.

Matching SHA-256 checksums mean the files’ contents are identical — not just similar-looking. This tool never deletes, renames or moves files.

About this tool

About File Duplicate Detector

File Duplicate Detector finds files with identical content among the files or folder you select. It calculates a SHA-256 checksum for each file on your device, groups files with matching checksums, and shows each file’s name, size, MIME type, checksum and group, along with totals for unique files, duplicate groups, duplicate copies and reclaimable space. It only reads files — it never uploads, changes, renames, moves or deletes them.

Duplicate downloads, photo exports and backups quietly waste disk space and make folders confusing. Comparing names or sizes isn’t reliable, but matching cryptographic checksums proves files are byte-for-byte identical, so you can tidy up with confidence.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Drop files onto the upload area, click to choose them, or press Choose a folder.
  2. Wait while each file’s SHA-256 checksum is calculated — progress is shown.
  3. Review the summary of unique files, duplicate groups and reclaimable space.
  4. Filter the table to show only duplicates, unique files or files that couldn’t be read.
  5. Copy the report or download it as CSV or TXT.
  6. Delete unwanted copies yourself in your file manager.

Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Keep the copy that is in the folder you organise and back up.
  • Double-check before deleting files in system or application folders.
  • Use the unique-size option to speed up checks of very large folders.
  • Remember that edited or re-saved files are not exact duplicates.
  • Run the check again after moving files to confirm the result.

FAQ

Common questions

Each file’s complete content is run through SHA-256, a cryptographic checksum. Files with the same checksum have the same content byte for byte, whatever their names, dates or folders.
No. Only exact copies match. A resized photo, a re-saved document or a file with one byte changed has a different checksum and counts as unique.
No. It only reads the files you select. It cannot delete, rename or move anything — use the report to decide what to remove yourself.
No. Files are read and hashed in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
Files up to 256 MB are hashed with the browser’s built-in Web Crypto API; larger files are hashed in 8 MB pieces so memory use stays low. Very large sets take time, and you can stop at any point.
The space you would free by keeping one copy from each duplicate group and deleting the rest. “Duplicate files” counts those extra copies.
Files can only be identical if they are the same size, so a file whose size matches no other file is reported as unique without reading it. This is faster for large folders but leaves its checksum blank.
