About this tool

About UTM Builder

UTM Builder adds campaign parameters — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term and utm_content — to any URL so the visits it brings are labelled in your analytics. It keeps existing query parameters and #fragments and percent-encodes every value.

Untagged links from newsletters, ads and social posts often show up as direct or referral traffic, hiding which campaign worked. Consistent UTM tags make campaign reporting clear, and building them with a tool avoids broken URLs from manual editing.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Paste the destination website URL.
  2. Enter utm_source (required), then utm_medium and utm_campaign (recommended).
  3. Click a medium preset such as email or social, or type your own.
  4. Add utm_term or utm_content if you need them.
  5. Check the final URL and the parameter breakdown.
  6. Copy the URL, or copy it as an HTML link.

Tips for best results

  • Use lowercase values and a consistent naming scheme across campaigns.
  • Keep source, medium and campaign filled in for clear reporting.
  • Do not use UTM tags on links between pages of your own site.
  • Test the final URL once to confirm the page loads correctly.
  • Record the tags you use in a shared sheet so your team stays consistent.

FAQ

Common questions

utm_source is required here. utm_medium and utm_campaign are strongly recommended so reports group traffic clearly. utm_term (paid keywords) and utm_content (to tell apart links or ads) are optional.
Yes. Parameters already on the URL stay in place and the UTM parameters are added after them. If the URL already has a UTM parameter you fill in, your new value replaces it.
It is preserved and kept at the end of the URL, after the query string, which is where browsers expect it.
Yes. Each value is percent-encoded with encodeURIComponent, so spaces become %20 and characters like & and = cannot break the URL.
No. It only builds the URL text in your browser. There is no click tracking, link shortening or data collection.
Many analytics tools treat Email and email as different values. Pick one convention, usually lowercase, and use it consistently.
It is best not to: tagging internal links can overwrite the original traffic source of a visit. Use UTMs on links from emails, ads, social posts and other external places.
