Encrypt Text

Text Encrypt / Decrypt Tool

Protect a message with a password, or unlock text encrypted here. Encryption uses your browser’s built-in Web Crypto API — AES-256-GCM with a PBKDF2-derived key, a random salt and a new random IV every time.

Back

1. Input

AES-256-GCM · PBKDF2

Remember your password. Lost passwords cannot be recovered, and encrypted text cannot be opened without it.

2. Output

Nothing is sent or stored
Enter text and a password to encrypt, or switch to Decrypt.

Suitable for everyday privacy, such as sharing a note over an untrusted channel. Not intended for regulated, medical, financial, military or other high-risk secrets.

About this tool

About Text Encrypt / Decrypt Tool

Text Encrypt / Decrypt Tool protects text with a password using the browser’s built-in Web Crypto API. A 256-bit AES-GCM key is derived from your password with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA-256 (600,000 iterations) and a random salt, and each encryption uses a new random IV. The output is a single self-contained line that includes the format version, iteration count, salt, IV and ciphertext, and can be decrypted here with the same password.

Sometimes you need to send or store a short secret — a note, a configuration value or a message — somewhere you don’t fully trust. Encrypting it with a strong password first means only someone with the password can read it. Because standard algorithms are used and nothing leaves your browser, there is no account and no server involved.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Choose Encrypt.
  2. Type or paste the text you want to protect.
  3. Enter a strong password and type it again to confirm.
  4. Press Encrypt, then copy or download the encrypted text.
  5. To read it later, choose Decrypt, paste the encrypted text, enter the password and press Decrypt.
  6. Press Reset when you are done to clear the text and passwords.
Key features

What it offers

  • AES-256-GCM authenticated encryption via the Web Crypto API
  • PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA-256 key derivation with 600,000 iterations
  • Random 16-byte salt and 12-byte IV for every encryption
  • Self-contained, versioned output format
  • Confirm-password check before encrypting
  • Clear errors for wrong passwords, damaged text and unsupported browsers
  • Copy and download for encrypted and decrypted text
  • Fields cleared on Reset and when the page is closed
Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Use a long passphrase of several random words, and don’t reuse it elsewhere.
  • Store the password separately from the encrypted text — for example in a password manager.
  • Share the password through a different channel than the encrypted message.
  • Test decryption before deleting the original text.
  • Use dedicated, audited software for regulated, financial, medical or other high-risk data.

Standard crypto

Only built-in, well-reviewed browser algorithms.

Tamper-evident

AES-GCM detects any change to the encrypted text.

Text and passwords never leave your browser.

Portable

One line of text you can paste anywhere.

FAQ

Common questions

With AES-256-GCM through the browser’s Web Crypto API. The key is derived from your password with PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA-256 (600,000 iterations) and a random 16-byte salt, and every encryption uses a new random 12-byte IV. No custom cryptography is used.
A single line starting with TLENC1 that contains the format version, the iteration count, the salt, the IV and the ciphertext with its authentication tag. It is everything needed to decrypt — except your password.
The text cannot be recovered. There is no back door, reset or recovery — keep the password somewhere safe.
AES-GCM checks that the data is authentic before decrypting. A wrong password and a single changed character both make that check fail, and the two cases cannot be told apart.
No. Everything happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, saved or logged, and the fields are cleared when you press Reset or leave the page.
It uses standard, well-reviewed algorithms, but a web page cannot protect against malware on your device, a weak password or someone watching your screen. Don’t rely on it for regulated, medical, financial, military or other high-risk information.
The format is specific to this tool, though it is built only from standard parts (PBKDF2, AES-GCM, base64url) and could be decrypted by any software that follows the same layout.
