Calculate

Quadratic Equation Solver

Enter the coefficients a, b and c to solve ax² + bx + c = 0. You get the discriminant, the type of solution, the roots in exact form where possible and as decimals, every step of the working and a graph of the parabola. Calculated locally with a numerically stable method.

About this tool

About Quadratic Equation Solver

Quadratic Equation Solver finds every solution of ax² + bx + c = 0. It reports the discriminant and the type of solution — two real roots, one repeated root or two complex roots — handles the linear and degenerate cases when a = 0, gives exact roots where the coefficients allow and decimal roots always, and draws the parabola with its roots marked.

Quadratics appear in algebra, physics, finance and engineering. The textbook formula can silently lose accuracy for one root when b is large, so a solver that uses a numerically stable method, shows its steps and handles every special case gives answers you can rely on and learn from.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Enter the coefficient a of x².
  2. Enter the coefficient b of x (use 0 if there is no x term).
  3. Enter the constant c (use 0 if there is none).
  4. Press Solve equation.
  5. Read the discriminant, roots, steps and graph, then copy or download the summary.
Key features

What it offers

  • Two real, one repeated and complex-conjugate roots
  • Linear, no-solution and infinitely-many-solution cases when a = 0
  • Numerically stable root formula that keeps small roots accurate
  • Exact roots as fractions or simplified square roots where possible
  • Discriminant, vertex and step-by-step working
  • Accurate graph of the parabola drawn from its vertex form
Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Rearrange your equation into the form ax² + bx + c = 0 before entering the coefficients.
  • Enter 0 for missing terms rather than leaving a box empty.
  • Use the exact form for homework and the decimal form for measurements.
  • Check the graph: real roots are where the curve crosses the x-axis.

FAQ

Common questions

The discriminant D = b² − 4ac decides the type of roots. If D > 0 there are two different real roots, if D = 0 there is one repeated real root, and if D < 0 there are two complex roots that are conjugates of each other.
The formula x = (−b ± √D) ÷ 2a can lose almost all accuracy for one root when b is very large compared with a and c, because two nearly equal numbers are subtracted. This solver uses the equivalent stable form q = −½(b + sign(b)√D), x₁ = q ÷ a and x₂ = c ÷ q, which keeps both roots accurate.
The equation is no longer quadratic. If b ≠ 0 it is linear and has one solution x = −c ÷ b. If b = 0 and c ≠ 0 there is no solution, and if a, b and c are all 0 every number is a solution.
When a, b and c are whole numbers or decimals with up to 6 decimal places (and not too large), the roots are also shown exactly — as fractions, or in simplified square-root form such as (−1 ± √5)/2. Otherwise only decimal values are shown.
They are calculated in double precision and shown to 10 significant digits.
The parabola y = ax² + bx + c around its vertex, with the real roots marked where the curve crosses the x-axis. It is drawn from the vertex form, so it stays accurate for large coefficients; if the roots are too close together to draw meaningfully, the graph is left out and the reason is given.
Yes. Values such as 2.5e-3 or 1e8 are accepted, up to 1e100 in size.
No. The coefficients are parsed as plain numbers — nothing is run as code — and everything is calculated in your browser.
