About this tool

About Meta Robots Tag Generator

Meta Robots Tag Generator builds a <meta name="robots"> tag and the matching X-Robots-Tag HTTP header line from the directives you choose: index or noindex, follow or nofollow, noarchive, nosnippet, noimageindex, max-snippet, max-image-preview and unavailable_after, optionally addressed to a single crawler.

Robots directives control how pages appear in search results, and a typo or contradictory pair can have unintended effects. Generating them from clear choices, with each one explained, avoids mistakes.

FAQ

Common questions

The meta tag goes in a page’s HTML <head>. The X-Robots-Tag is an HTTP response header with the same directives; it also works for files that have no HTML, such as PDFs and images. Use whichever your setup allows — you do not need both.
They contradict each other, so each pair is a single choice: index or noindex, follow or nofollow, or leave it unspecified to use the default. nosnippet and max-snippet are also mutually exclusive.
No directive can force a result. noindex is a request that major search engines generally honour once they recrawl the page, and the page must not be blocked by robots.txt or they cannot see the request.
Turn it on and pick a date and time, which is treated as UTC. The tool outputs it in ISO 8601 format, such as unavailable_after: 2027-06-30T18:00:00Z. Past dates are rejected.
It addresses the directives to one crawler, such as googlebot, instead of all crawlers. The meta tag becomes <meta name="googlebot" …> and the header becomes X-Robots-Tag: googlebot: …. Other crawlers ignore it.
No. Index and follow are the defaults, so if you select nothing, no tag is needed. The tool only outputs a tag when at least one directive is chosen.
No. The tag is built in your browser, and nothing is stored or sent.
