OCR can make mistakes and does not guarantee exact extraction. Printed text in clear, well-lit, straight images works best; handwriting, stylised fonts and blurry photos are often misread.

About this tool

About Image to Text OCR

Image to Text OCR reads printed text from images using Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly, with bundled English and Hindi (Devanagari) language data. Choose the language, optionally rotate, scale, convert to grayscale or boost contrast, and the recognised text appears in an editable box with word and character counts and the engine’s own confidence score.

Retyping text from screenshots, scanned forms, receipts, notices or book pages is slow and error-prone. OCR gives you editable text in seconds — and because everything runs in your browser, private documents are never uploaded. OCR is not perfect: blurry, skewed, low-resolution or handwritten images can produce mistakes, so the output is editable and should be checked.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or other browser-supported image containing text.
  2. Choose English, Hindi (Devanagari) or English + Hindi.
  3. Rotate the image upright if needed, and try Scale 200% or more contrast for small or faint text.
  4. Press Extract text and follow the real progress from the OCR engine.
  5. Check and correct the recognised text in the editable box.
  6. Copy the text or download it as a .txt file.

FAQ

Common questions

No. The OCR engine (Tesseract, compiled to WebAssembly) and its language data are downloaded from this website and run in your browser. The image and the extracted text stay on your device.
English and Hindi (Devanagari script), or both together for mixed text. Choose the language before pressing Extract text — using the wrong language gives poor results.
It depends on the image. Clear, straight, well-lit printed text usually reads well. Blurry, skewed, low-resolution or handwritten text, decorative fonts and complex layouts often produce mistakes. Always check and correct the result.
It is the mean word confidence reported by the Tesseract engine for this image. A low value is a useful warning sign, but a high value does not guarantee every word is correct.
Crop the image to the text, rotate it upright, try Scale 200% for small text, increase contrast for faint text, and keep grayscale on. A sharper, better-lit photo helps most.
Only poorly. The bundled models are trained for printed text, so handwriting is usually misread.
Files up to 30 MB and images up to 50 megapixels can be opened. The image sent to OCR is limited to 5000 pixels on its longest side. The first run takes longer while the engine and language data load.
