GIF Compressor

GIF Compressor

Make GIFs smaller without turning them into still images. Resize, keep every 2nd or 3rd frame, reduce colours and store only the pixels that change between frames — then compare the original and the result side by side.

Add a GIF file to compress it.

Dropping frames keeps the total duration by lengthening the remaining frames. Fewer colours and stronger optimisation make smaller files with more visible quality loss.

About this tool

About GIF Compressor

GIF Compressor makes animated and static GIF files smaller in your browser. It decodes every frame (honouring the GIF’s disposal rules), then lets you reduce the dimensions, keep only every 2nd, 3rd or 4th frame, use fewer colours, and optimise frames so only changing pixels are stored. The animation, total duration and loop setting are kept, and the original and compressed GIFs are shown side by side with their sizes.

Large GIFs load slowly, hit upload limits on chat apps, email and websites, and use mobile data. Shrinking them usually means installing software or uploading to a website. This tool processes the file locally and tells you honestly what happened — including when a GIF cannot be made smaller, which can happen with files that are already well optimised.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Drop an animated or static GIF onto the upload area.
  2. Review the original size, dimensions, frame count and duration.
  3. Lower the width (height follows when Keep aspect ratio is on) if the GIF is larger than needed.
  4. Choose a frame rate, number of colours and compression level.
  5. Press Compress GIF and compare the original and compressed previews.
  6. Download the result — or keep your original if the result is not smaller.
Key features

What it offers

  • Keeps animation, timing and loop setting (or loop forever if you choose)
  • Resize with aspect-ratio lock (no enlarging)
  • Frame-rate reduction that preserves total duration
  • Colour reduction from 256 down to 16
  • Frame optimisation that stores only changed pixels, with exact and lossy levels
  • Original vs compressed size, percentage saved, frames, dimensions and duration
  • Clear warning when the result is not smaller than the original
  • Optional, explicit conversion to a still image
Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Resize first — dimensions usually have the biggest effect on file size.
  • Try “balanced” frame optimisation before reducing colours a lot.
  • Drop frames only for smooth motion; it can make fast animations look choppy.
  • Compare the previews at full size before replacing the original.
  • Keep the original file in case you need a higher-quality version later.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes. Animated GIFs stay animated, with the same total timing and, by default, the same loop setting. A GIF is only turned into a still image if you tick “Make a still image”.
By reducing the dimensions, dropping frames (their time is added to the remaining frames), using fewer colours, and frame optimisation, which stores only the pixels that change from one frame to the next. The “strong” level also treats nearly identical pixels as unchanged, which is slightly lossy.
Yes, sometimes — for example when the original was already well optimised. The tool always shows both sizes and clearly says when the result is not smaller, so you can keep your original.
No. The GIF is decoded and re-encoded in your browser by bundled open-source libraries running in a background worker.
Yes. Transparency is kept. For GIFs with transparency, the frame-difference optimisation is skipped so transparent areas stay correct, which can make the savings smaller.
Files up to 50 MB, canvases up to 4096 × 4096 px, and about 800 million pixels across all frames. Enlarging is not supported. Very long or large GIFs can take a while to process.
Re-encoding re-quantises colours with a palette for each frame, and resizing or dropping frames changes detail and smoothness. Compare the previews before you download.
