Fuel Cost Calculator

Enter the trip distance, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and the fuel price to estimate how much fuel the journey uses and what it costs — one way or there and back. Every unit conversion is shown, and nothing is fetched online: you enter the price yourself.

About this tool

About Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a journey uses and what it costs, from the distance, your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and the fuel price. It accepts kilometres or miles, km/L, L/100 km, US mpg or Imperial mpg, and prices per litre or per gallon, and shows every conversion it makes.

Fuel-efficiency figures come in several incompatible units, and mixing up US and Imperial gallons alone changes the answer by about 20%. A calculator that converts each unit with exact factors and shows its working lets you budget a trip or compare vehicles with confidence.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Enter the one-way distance and choose kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter your fuel efficiency and choose its unit.
  3. Enter the fuel price and whether it is per litre, US gallon or Imperial gallon.
  4. Tick Round trip if you are coming back the same way.
  5. Press Calculate fuel cost, then check the conversions and copy or download the summary.

Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Use your real-world average consumption rather than the official test figure.
  • Check whether an mpg figure is US or Imperial before entering it.
  • Add a margin for traffic, hills, heavy loads or air conditioning.
  • Update the fuel price before each long trip.

FAQ

Common questions

Kilometres per litre (km/L), litres per 100 kilometres (L/100 km), US miles per gallon and Imperial (UK) miles per gallon. Each is converted to kilometres per litre before the fuel used is worked out, and the conversion is shown in the summary.
1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres and 1 Imperial gallon = 4.54609 litres. These are the exact legal definitions.
An Imperial gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, so the same car shows a higher mpg figure in UK units. Pick the mpg type that matches where the figure comes from.
Yes. Choose whether the price is per litre, per US gallon or per Imperial gallon. The fuel used is converted to the same unit before multiplying by the price.
No. The page makes no network requests. Enter your local pump price; the currency selector only changes the symbol shown.
It doubles the one-way distance, fuel and cost, and shows both the one-way figures and the round-trip total.
It is as accurate as the efficiency figure you enter. Real consumption changes with speed, traffic, load, terrain, weather and air conditioning, so treat the result as an estimate.
No. All calculations run in your browser.
