About this tool

About Date Difference Calculator

Date Difference Calculator measures the time between two calendar dates. It gives the total number of days, the same span as weeks and days, the calendar difference in years, months and days, and the equivalent hours, minutes and seconds. You can choose whether the end date itself is counted.

Counting days across month ends and leap years by hand is error-prone, and many online counters quietly shift by an hour or a day around daylight-saving changes. Working purely with calendar dates gives the same answer anywhere in the world, which matters for deadlines, notice periods, project plans and contracts.

How to use

Step by step

  1. Choose the start date.
  2. Choose the end date (use Swap dates if you entered them the wrong way round).
  3. Tick “Include the end date” if both the first and last day should count.
  4. Press Calculate difference.
  5. Read the totals, then copy or download the summary.

Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Decide up front whether your rule counts the end date — leave periods often do, durations usually do not.
  • For ages and birthdays, the Age Calculator shows your age and next birthday.
  • Remember that months have different lengths, so “1 month” is not a fixed number of days.
  • Use total days rather than months when an agreement specifies a number of days.

FAQ

Common questions

Not by default: from 1 March to 2 March is 1 day. Tick “Include the end date” to count both the start and end days, which adds one day — useful for things like hotel nights versus days of an event, or leave periods.
Every date is converted to a day number on the calendar, so 29 February is counted whenever it falls between your dates. For example, 1 February to 1 March is 29 days in 2024 and 28 days in 2025.
No. The calculator works with calendar dates only, never with clock times in your time zone, so a daylight-saving change between the two dates cannot add or remove an hour or a day.
It finds the largest number of whole months from the start date that does not pass the end date, then counts the days left over. When the start day does not exist in a month (for example the 31st), that month ends on its last day: 31 January to 28 February 2025 is 0 years, 1 month and 0 days.
They are the total days × 24, × 1,440 and × 86,400, treating every calendar day as 24 hours. They describe the length of the date range, not clock time between specific times of day.
The calculator shows an error rather than a negative answer. Use Swap dates to reverse them in one click.
