Assumptions
  • No new purchases, fees or cash advances on the card.
  • Monthly interest = opening balance × APR ÷ 12, rounded to the nearest cent / paisa.
  • Payments are made at the end of each month, after interest is added.
  • The one-time extra is paid with the first payment; the recurring extra with every payment.

Enter your balance, APR and payment, then press Calculate payoff.

Real card issuers may use daily balances, grace periods, fees, multiple APRs, different payment-allocation rules and changing rates, so actual results will differ. This is not financial advice.

About this tool

About Credit Card Payoff Calculator

Credit Card Payoff Calculator estimates how long it will take to clear one credit card balance with a fixed monthly payment, how much interest you will pay in total and what each month looks like. In target mode it works the other way round and finds the smallest fixed payment that clears the balance within the number of months you choose.

Small changes to a card payment make a large difference to payoff time and interest because interest is charged on the remaining balance every month. Seeing the full schedule, including one-time and recurring extra payments, makes those trade-offs concrete.

Best practices

Tips for best results

  • Use the APR shown on your latest statement for purchases.

FAQ

Common questions

Each month, interest is the opening balance × APR ÷ 12, rounded to the nearest cent (or paisa). The payment is applied at the end of the month, after interest. Amounts are kept in whole cents internally, so the schedule totals add up exactly.
Card issuers usually charge interest on the average daily balance, may offer grace periods, add fees, use several APRs (purchases, cash advances, promotions), apply payments to balances in their own order, and change rates over time. This calculator uses one APR, no new purchases and no fees.
If the payment does not cover the first month’s interest, the balance would never go down. The calculator warns you and does not produce a schedule unless a one-time extra payment brings the balance low enough for the regular payment to reduce it.
Enter the number of months you want to be debt-free in. The calculator searches for the smallest fixed monthly payment, in whole cents, that clears the balance within that many months, including any extra payments you enter.
Together with the first monthly payment. The recurring extra payment is added to every monthly payment until the balance is cleared.
No. It only changes the symbol and digit grouping shown. All amounts are treated as the same currency you enter.
No. It is an educational estimate to help you understand how payment size and APR affect payoff time and interest. Check your card agreement or statement for exact figures.
