About this tool

About CAGR Calculator

CAGR Calculator finds the compound annual growth rate between a beginning value and an ending value over a period of years and months. It handles growth and decline, treats months as fractions of a year, and shows the growth multiple and total change. It assumes no deposits or withdrawals during the period. Educational estimate only — not financial advice.

CAGR expresses growth over several years as one smoothed yearly rate, which makes outcomes over different time periods easier to compare than a simple total percentage.

FAQ

Common questions

CAGR = (ending value ÷ beginning value)^(1 ÷ years) − 1, expressed as a percentage. Years can include a fraction from the months you enter.
Months are divided by 12 and added to the years. For example, 2 years and 6 months is 2.5 years, and 18 months on its own is 1.5 years.
Yes. When the ending value is lower than the beginning value, the ratio is below 1 and CAGR is negative — the steady yearly rate of decline.
No. CAGR assumes the money grew on its own, with no deposits or withdrawals during the period. If you added or took out money, CAGR will not describe your actual return accurately.
The formula takes a ratio and a fractional power, which are not defined for a beginning value of zero or for zero or negative values. Such inputs are rejected.
Simple ROI shows the total change over the whole period. CAGR spreads that change into an equivalent constant yearly rate, so investments held for different lengths of time can be compared.
